A key aim of the project
that was run in
collaboration with
UNICEF was to advance
issues of integration
and social change
through respect and the
expression of rights
through photography.

The workshops include
discussions on rights
and identity, to living
without discrimination
regardless of
nationality or gender.
The group became aware
of their rights and
recognized equalities
and inequalities in
their lives.
Throughout June and July
2010 a group of 18
Iraqi, Palestinian and
Syrian girls and boys
worked alongside each
other to explore and
document their
environment in Damascus.
They documented the
world as they perceived
and experienced it,
looking at both their
achievements and the
struggles they face.
They produced individual
portfolios of work from
which they selected
images to be shown on
the refocus website and
in a final exhibition.
We provided creative
stimuli, technical
support, project-based
work and photo essays
about life, rights and
equality.
The course included
trips to a variety of
locations in Syria,
including, cities, the
countryside and the
coast where they enjoyed
photographing and
working as a team,
discussing and learning
from each other. Each
participant received a
digital camera from one
of our sponsors that
they kept 2 months to
freely explore their
world through the lens.
A pool of cameras has
been left with the
students to enable them
to continue using and
developing photography.
Exhibitions of their
work have held within
the community and in
various international
venues.
