Our new project will
begin this summer,
please read on for more
details.
Among Iraqi refugees who
fled to Syria,
adolescent girls are
reported to be those
most at risk of
exploitation. They are
less likely to attend
secondary education than
boys, their privacy is
very restricted and they
often have no space to
claim as their own. They
also lack a safe outlet
in which to express
themselves, interact
with others and any
positive distraction
from their struggles
A key aim of the
project, being run in
collaboration with
UNICEF, is to advance
social change through
gender respect and the
expression of women's
rights through
photography. As a
result, the group will
work in teams to
visually publicise their
rights in the community,
creating a social
awareness of gender
equality.
Throughout July and
August a group of 20
girls and boys will work
alongside each other to
explore and document
their environment,
become aware of their
rights and identify
equalities and
inequalities in their
lives. They will produce
images of the world
through their own eyes,
looking at both the
achievements and the
struggles they face.
They will also be
producing individual
portfolios of work from
which they will select
images to be shown on
the refocus website.
We will provide creative
stimuli, technical
support, project-based
work and photo essays
about life, rights and
equality. Each
participant will receive
a digital camera from
one of our sponsors;
they will keep this
camera for 2 months when
they will be able to
freely explore their
world through the lens.
We will then help them
organise exhibitions of
their work within the
community.
Refocus will continue to
exhibit their work in
the UK later on in the
year. |
